Waverly Avenue Bridge Replacement Project
Latest Project Updates
Jan. 31, 2024 - Installation of new drilled piles for the Waverly Avenue Bridge has continued on schedule. The new piles will be used to support the necessary excavation to allow installation of the new foundation footings for the wider bridge span. The Contractor will complete the installation of piles on the Fenimore Road side of the Bridge before moving onto the Plaza Avenue approach in the coming weeks.
Evaluation of traffic conditions along the Bridge Detour Route was completed in December and final recommendations intended to mitigate travel delays during peak rush hours were shared between the Town and Village at the start of January. The recommendations include adjustment of timing for several traffic signals and modification of pavement markings on Hoyt Avenue. The Town and Village have directed contractors to complete the necessary changes that will subsequently allow for re-evaluation of traffic conditions with the new measures in place. Completion of the necessary changes and re-evaluation of traffic flow is expected within the next two week period.
Jan. 17, 2024 - The Contractor’s schedule has site work excavation scheduled to begin in the next two week period. We expect to see an active presence by the contractor continued through the winter months, providing that weather cooperates. The construction contract allows 300 days, approximately 10 months, for the bridge to be closed to traffic, without penalties to the contractor. It is fully anticipated that Waverly Ave will be reopened on or before September 26, 2024. The Village and the Town are actively working on other measures to mitigate the disruptions associated with the project. In addition to replacing a deteriorated bridge, this project is part of a larger initiative to mitigate the extreme flooding, which continues to negatively affect the Mamaroneck Community. We ask for your patience.
Nov. 22, 2023 - The Waverly Avenue Bridge will be CLOSED beginning Friday, December 1st, 2023. The closure is necessary to facilitate the replacement of the bridge. Motorists should follow the posted detour utilizing Hoyt Avenue as an alternate route. Access to local businesses in the vicinity of the bridge will be maintained at all times. The duration of the Bridge Closure is currently expected to be 10 months. Motorists are urged to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones.
Oct. 27, 2023 - Construction activity on the Waverly Avenue Bridge has been suspended by the Village of Mamaroneck pending an agreement between the Town and Village on funding police overtime for traffic control. The Town is working diligently to resolve the situation and will provide further updates when they are available.

Construction activities are currently underway for the Replacement of the Waverly Ave Bridge over the Sheldrake River in the Village of Mamaroneck. The construction contract was awarded by the Town of Mamaroneck to ELQ Industries, Inc. in Summer 2023. Design of the replacement bridge incorporated recommendations from the 2017 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Flood Risk Management Final Report. Specifically, replacing the bridge structure with a longer span and deeper foundations will complement the Army Corps of Engineers’ plans to widen the channel and coincide with other recommended flood mitigation measures through the Sheldrake and Mamaroneck Rivers. The Bridge Replacement will address structural deficiencies of the existing bridge crossing but also benefit the community by providing an improved roadway alignment and new sidewalks on both sides of the bridge. Other site work incidental to the bridge replacement includes relocation and replacement of underground and overhead utilities including water, sewer, electric, and natural gas. The project schedule estimates 10 months of construction with a completion date in Summer 2024.
The Town of Mamaroneck received grant funding towards the Waverly Avenue Bridge Project in the amounts of $1.75 M through the NYS Department of Transportation BridgeNY program; and $2.084M through Westchester County’s Flood Mitigation Grant program. Requirements of both grant programs are being implemented through the construction of the replacement bridge.
Bi-weekly construction meetings will be held for the duration of the project schedule with the project team including representatives from both the Town of Mamaroneck and Village of Mamaroneck. The Town and Village will continue to coordinate and collaborate throughout the construction progress and respond to issues as they arise.
